ABOUT THE HONEST ANGLER
Thank you all for visiting the site. My name is Mark Pickett, I am 23 years old and I have been fishing all my life. However, I got fairly serious into it when I was 12. I started researching baits, species, tackle, etc… The rest is really history. I was born and raised in Vacaville, CA but my military career has taken me to VA. Let’s talk about how I got here…
I started off as an avid creek angler. Being 12 you can’t exactly drive yourself all over the place. I would walk up and down my local creek, finding spots, bush whacking, climbing trees, you name it. My father and I would go out on the delta, river, or SF bay every weekend. I loved having the opportunity to go out and catch a new species. At that age I was determined to catch every species that was around my local area. From middle school to high school, fishing was my main hobby. Instead of going after girls, and getting into trouble, and all of that other teen age delinquency, I was fishing.
As time went on, I progressed rapidly through the ranks. As far as rigging for any species in the area, I knew how to do it. I was and still am, striving to learn as much knowledge as I could about what I was catching. Hours and days of research, trial and error, and plenty of trips to the bait shop(which I lived less than a mile from). As fast as I enlisted in the USAF, my ship out date came faster. I used most if not all of my graduation money to fish 3-4 days a week before leaving for basic training. That to date is still one of the most successful and fun summers of all time. I was so excited to see where I was going to end up for my first duty station. I really was praying to be back in California. It turns out ALOT of places are over fished in Japan, and I had little time and willpower to get out and explore other than a few times. I maybe made 2-3 attempts with no success fishing in japan. Most of the time there was spent doing school, working, and hanging out with friends.
As my 2 years were coming to a close, I was more eager than ever to see where I was going next. After being away from your family for that long, you start to lose it. 3 months out from my time in Japan, I received my orders. I was going to Andrews AFB, MD… This was going to be interesting. JAPAN! What… Japan. Okay I did not see this one coming. I was going to be living in Japan for 2 years. I was only 19 years old. I was stressed out to say the least, and really did not know much about fishing in Japan. The research started immediately. I started looking up rivers, lakes, places to live, fish species. I was very excited to be back in the states and able to regularly fish again. I soon discovered the Potomac river was my backyard. I couldn’t stop looking at the size of the blue catfish pulled out of there. I was so excited to get on some of those fish. I started my YouTube research, and found some local anglers that gave me some tips. One even invited me out with him, so we fished together probably my first year here.
As time went on I was getting the hang of the waters, learning where and where not to go. I started exploring on my own, hiking to find spots, google maps, depth charts, you name it. This is about the time I decided to start my own Youtube channel. I knew how to catch fish, and I felt I could give people some good content. The research started immediately. I started looking up rivers, lakes, places to live, fish species. I was very excited to be back in the states and able to regularly fish again. It was a success! Youtube is a journey but man is it addicting! I love bringing everyone great content, and I love engaging with my audience. From blue cats to bass, perch, pickerel, shad, and also striped bass, I have had so much fun catching these east coast species. I plan on continuing to share my adventures with you all, and help you find the best strategies to target your fish species.
